When we say we are committed to Black liberation it must be in service of sex workers’ autonomy. But they are never nuanced beings. The fight for sex worker liberation is the fight for all Black lives, and until that is prioritized, erasure and respectability politics will persist. In every industry.
Making space for stillness is an ode to those of us who have not and are unable to rest. It is an acknowledgement for those of us for which rest has been stolen.
Those feelings of hopelessness have given me time to re-examine the ways American, individualistic values have seeped into Black life. And perhaps those values have prevented us from acknowledging that we’ve always prioritized and practiced communal care in our families, neighborhoods and relationships.
Like most Black folks, the intentional and subliminal external messaging I received growing up were variations of me being unlovable, inadequate, and too much.
Between macro and micro, I would choose neither. I haven’t been able to make the microaggressions feel any less aggressive than a full slap to the face. For me, the macro only provides substance to the micro.
To me, Black liberation is synonymous with demilitarizing the murderous police state, abolishing the inhumane prison system and freeing folx from the constraints of our exploitative economic system.
The model minority myth is then a tool of anti-Black subordination as it has been historically used to justify the plight of Black folks and pit Asian Americans and Black people against each other due to Asian Americans racial positioning.
Without intending to, I subconsciously isolated Blackness from disability as if our history and our present doesnât reflect thatâas if the term âdisabledâ is not perpetually expanding and contracting to accommodate a plethora of other experiences.
The strategy that some on the left were hoping would deal him a massive blow was a predictable flop. It’s astonishing, really. Right now, we’re witnessing one of the rare moments where white liberals were neglected by the very authority figures—the clean cut devotees of the FBI—who for decades have actively protected their interests at the cost of minority lives.
